What the brand says: Introducing Pickup Liners, eight new lip pencils from theBalm Cosmetics. At last – a smooth talker that will always make you smile! These long-lasting, highly pigmented liners know how to get to the point and let the color do the talking. This formula stays in line, as it is specially formulated to not feather or bleed.

THEBALM PICKUP LINERS LIP LINERS

Packaging: The lip liners come in black coloured twist-up pencil form with a press-on lid with colour codes. The outer box is funky with all the comic prints characteristic of all TheBalm products.

THEBALM PICKUP LINERS LIP LINERSTexture: The lip liners are very matte and drying. If you have dry and flaky lips, application can be a bit tough and the tips might break too. Glides on smoothly on well prepared lips or if you have naturally smooth and soft lips.

Shade: There are a total of 8 shades in this range, here is a summary on each:

Fineapple: This is a really pretty neutral pink shade perfect for everyday use. Will go well on any outfit you wear and will suit fair, medium and dusky skin tones. Might look frosty or weird on very dark skin tones.

Tip: Use it on the edges and roughly filling it in; top it up with The Body Shop lip liquid in shade- Nairobi Camellia.

I Really Dig You: This is a brown-nude shade and has deep brown undertones that can look weird on medium to dark skin tones. Will suit perfectly on fair skin.

Acute One: This shade is similar to Fineapple but has less pink undertones.

Tip: Use it on the edges and roughly filling it in; top it up with TheBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes liquid lipstick in shade- Sincere.

Chemistry: This is a beautiful brown-peach shade and will suit all skin tones.

Tip: Use it on the edges and roughly filling it in; top it up with TheBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes liquid lipstick in shade- Charming.

Boyfriend Material: This is a perfect bright red shade and will go well with all skin tones.

Tip: Use it on the edges and roughly filling it in; top it up with Maybelline New York Superstay 24 Color 2 step lipstick in shade- Keep it Red. The liner is one tone lighter than the lipstick but works well.

Checking You Out: This is a perfect deep red-maroon shade and my favourite from the range. The colour is bold but looks beautiful on all skin tones. Darker skin tones too can give this a try.

The One You Need: This is a beautiful purple-maroon shade but more on the purple side. Looks gorgeous on all skin tones and another favourite from the range!

Tip: Use it on the edges and roughly filling it in; top it up with TheBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes liquid lipstick in shade- Dedicated or The Body Shop lip liquid in shade- Goa Magnolia.

Fine All Over: This is a coral red shade with a bit of neon orange undertones. Will suit all skin tones.

Fragrance: The lip liners have absolutely no fragrance at all.

How I use and staying power: Since these are lip liners, they are meant to used on the lip lines under a lipstick. I like using it alone since all the shades are pretty and they are matte! They work well alone or under a lipstick, however you prefer.

The lipsticks are very drying and you need to prepare your lips first if you have dry or chapped lips. Application can be a difficult on dry lips so make sure you exfoliate properly prior to application. If you have naturally soft lips, you can use the lip liners directly. I absolutely love the way they look when used as lipsticks- perfect matte and oh so comfortable! They do not smudge or transfer and stay intact all day long- until you have oily food. Oily or heavy meals fade them a bit from the center but the pigment still stays intact. Chapped lips can get drier if these lip pencils are used as lipsticks, so use them all over your lips only if you have well prepared and soft lips. Considering them as lip liners, they work amazing that way too- no bleeding and perfectly lines your lips due to their smaller diameter. When used all over the lips under a lipstick, these lip liners can actually make your lipstick stay longer. Overall, these lip liners are great and I absolutely love all the shades.

PROS:

  • Stays all day long when used as lipstick alone

CONS:

  • Expensive for a lip liner
  • Make lips drier
